Survived (and thrived) designing a deeply technical product for IT administrators — solo, without a BA, and with a whole lot of learning on the fly.

How might we help network security engineers set up telemetry flows effortlessly, see data health at a glance, and respond to outages before they cause damage?

Design Audit
We began the project with a Design Audit, evaluating the UI through heuristics and a visual review against design guidelines. This uncovered a list of UX/UI issues to fix and provided insights into the product’s overall usability.

02
Prototyping
For smaller features, we designed prototypes directly from stakeholder requirements. For larger features, we conducted user research before prototyping to ensure alignment with user needs.

03
Internal User Research
We used card sorting, user tests, self-recordings, support tickets, content analyses, and a final survey—resulting in 150 findings, 12 new backlog tasks, and a 79 SUS score. After the research, we ran a workshop to align the team on insights and action items.

05
UX Metrics
To track usability and satisfaction, we defined product-specific UX metrics, established measurement methods (surveys, testing, analytics), and developed a custom SUM calculator for consistent evaluation.

User Testing
We user-tested every major feature pre-launch, analyzing both performance metrics and qualitative feedback. This ensured designs met user needs, caught UX issues early, and informed future improvements.

Outcomes
90% reduction in configuration time. Network setup now takes 30 minutes (previously days/weeks) from initial deployment to full operation;
Full visibility into data flows and transformations ensures reliable delivery of business-critical data;
Automated monitoring detects and resolves connectivity issues, minimizing downtime;
Engineers now spend less time on repetitive configuration and more on strategic tasks.
